Requirements for the Omegahat R-Java Interface

You will need both a Java runtime environment, specifically a Java virtual machine and a recent version of R

Java Virtual Machine

We have successfully used this interface on both Linux (2.2.14) and Solaris (SunOS 5.6 and 5.7). The Java Virtual Machines used were
Operating System JVM
Linux IBM 1.3
Blackdown 1.2.2
Solaris JDK1.3
JDK1.2
Windows 95/98/2000/NT4.0
JDK1.3 JDK1.2
Under Linux, we experience some difficulties using the Blackdown JDK 1.2.2 when using Swing from within R.

Support for (some of) the different Windows operating systems will be made available as more feedback on the current interface is received.

One does not need a Java compiler. However, one does need javah, the JNI header file generator.

R

Currently, the development version of R (1.2.0) contains some modifications that are used by this package. The installation of this package (and some other Omegahat packages for R) are easiest if one has installed this version of R.

Alternatively, one can use the most recent release of R available in different forms from www.r-project.org. This requires some manual intervention in the configuration. See the README file in the tar file for more information.
